Custom is not automatically better. It is better in specific conditions, and this county has a lot of those conditions.
Where Custom Genuinely Wins
Three situations make custom gunite the clearly correct choice here. Irregular lot geometry, where the pool needs to follow a property line or work around a tree's critical root zone. Restricted access, where no crane can reach and a concrete pump can. And any project involving a raised bond beam, a vanishing edge, an integrated spa or a beach entry, none of which come out of a mould.
The tree case is more common in Bradenton and Palmetto than people expect. Mature live oaks have root plates extending well beyond the drip line, and a freeform gunite shape can be drawn around them where a rectangular mould cannot.
Where Production Fiberglass Is the Better Decision
On a wide, flat, accessible lot in Parrish or an eastern subdivision, where the desired pool is a conventional rectangle or kidney and there is a mould that matches, fiberglass installs in three to six weeks against gunite's ten to sixteen, for meaningfully less money, and it never needs resurfacing.
Choosing custom in that situation buys shape freedom you are not using. That is a legitimate choice if you want it, but it should be a choice rather than a default.
The Access Question That Decides It for You
A fiberglass shell arrives as one piece up to about 16 feet wide and is set by crane. If the crane boom cannot clear the airspace over the excavation, the shell cannot be placed, and no amount of wanting fiberglass changes that.
This rules fiberglass out on a substantial share of older Palmetto, Bradenton and Bayshore Gardens lots, where mature oak canopy occupies exactly the airspace the boom needs. Gunite arrives as material through a hose and does not care.
The Twenty-Year Cost Comparison
Gunite costs more up front and needs resurfacing every eight to fifteen years, at $8,000 to $22,000 each time. Fiberglass costs less up front and has no equivalent recurring surface cost, though the gelcoat may want a cosmetic refinish somewhere past fifteen years.
Over twenty years the gap narrows considerably and can invert depending on finish choice. The non-financial factor worth weighing is that every gunite resurface means draining the pool, and in this water table every drain is a structural exposure event.
What Custom Does Not Buy You
Custom construction does not buy better durability, better water chemistry, lower running costs or a better warranty. Those come from specification and from the builder, not from the shell type. A well-built fiberglass pool from a competent builder will outperform a poorly built custom pool every time.
It also does not reliably buy resale value in this market. Buyers here expect a pool; they do not usually pay a premium for a custom one over a good conventional one. Build custom because the lot requires it or because you want it, not as an investment thesis.

Custom gunite is the right answer on irregular lots, restricted-access lots, and anywhere you want features that do not come out of a mould, which describes most of coastal Manatee County.
