Florida does not have four seasons, it has two, and the pool calendar follows the water table rather than the temperature.
December to April: The Dry Season Work Window
This is when anything requiring an empty pool should happen. Groundwater is at its lowest, so draining for resurfacing, structural repair or renovation carries much less hydrostatic risk. It is also when the dry-season schedule books out, which means a January resurface is a September conversation.
Chemistry is easier through these months. Less rain means less dilution, lower water temperature means slower chlorine consumption, and algae pressure drops considerably. Owners running a heat pump will find these the months it works hardest, and a solar cover pays for itself fastest.
May: Lovebugs and the First Heat
The May lovebug flight loads skimmer baskets and filters within days. Check filter pressure more often than usual and clean when it rises 8 to 10 psi above the clean baseline rather than on schedule. Water temperature climbs quickly this month and chlorine demand climbs with it.
This is also the last comfortable month to get drain-dependent work done before the water table rises. If a resurface has been deferred all winter, May is the decision point.
June to September: Wet Season Management
Afternoon storms dilute the pool nearly daily, dropping chlorine, stabiliser and alkalinity faster than a weekly test cycle catches. Test twice a week. Check chlorine the same day as any heavy storm rather than waiting.
Do not drain the pool during these months without groundwater control. If work genuinely cannot wait, it needs a dewatering pump running on the hydrostatic relief sump for the entire period the pool sits empty. This is the single most important seasonal rule in this region.
June to November: Storm Season Readiness
Know in advance where the pool equipment breaker is and how to shut it off. Before a named storm, kill power to the equipment, store loose furniture rather than sinking it in the pool, and superchlorinate to carry the water through several days without circulation.
Never drain the pool ahead of a storm. A full pool is heavier and more stable, and a partially drained one in a saturated water table is the exact condition that lifts shells. Afterwards, expect substantial dilution and organic load, and rebalance the water before turning a heater back on.
October and November: The Second Lovebug Flight and Recovery
The autumn lovebug flight repeats May's filter loading. Storm season is still open through November, so wet-season rules still apply even as the rain eases. Water temperature starts dropping toward the end of this window, which is when heat pump owners notice their running costs.
This is the right time to book dry-season work. Contractors' December to April schedules fill from about September onward, and a pool that needs resurfacing in January is competing for those slots with everyone else who realised the same thing.
